The Tallest Statue in the World
The Statue of Unity is the gigantic Statue of Great Indian freedom fighter and The first Home Minister of Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was also the First Deputy Prime Minister of India and follower of Father of Nation of India, Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle of India.
Why the name, Statue of Unity?
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was responsible for uniting the 562 Princely states of India to form a single union. Before Independence of India, the country consisted of different various small states. He was the man, who integrated all these states together to form the Republic of India.
And thus, to represent his power to unite all diverse kinds of people in the country, the Statue is named as the Statue of Unity.
The Statue is located in Beautiful Narmada Valley, on the banks of the Narmada river in the Kevadiya colony of the Narmada district in the state of Gujarat. It faces the huge Sardar Sarovar Dam built over the Narmada River in the magnificent city of Vadodara. This splendid Statue is constructed on a river island named Sadhu Bet.
The foundation of the Statue of Unity was kept on 31st October 2013 after the announcement of the project in 2010. It took almost five years for the completion of its construction. And on 31st October 2018, the inauguration of Statue of Unity was done by Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi.
Why 31st October? Daily Tactics Guru explains…
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31st October 1875 in Nadiad district of Gujarat. And as the Statue is dedicated to The Iron Man of India, so to celebrate his 143rd birth anniversary, the inauguration took place on 31st October 2018.
The credit for this aesthetic design of the Statue goes to the Indian sculptor, Mr. Ram V. Sutar.
The Statue of Unity is the replica of a Statue of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel placed at Ahmedabad International Airport, but of much larger size. The height of the statue represents the number of seats in the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat.
The Statue of Unity consumed 5,700 tonnes of steel, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel rods, and 2,500,000 cubic feet of concrete for its construction. Around 12,000 bronze panels are covering the Statue.
More than 2000 workers contributed with their hard work for the building of the Statue.
The Statue is segmented into mainly 5 sections. Out of which only three are open for the general public.
