This, 540 million dollar Statue is 182 meters tall with a base of approximately 58 meters. Because of which it becomes the world’s largest statue leaving behind the Spring Temple of Buddha.

The Tallest Statue of Unity in the World

Statue of Unity is the gigantic Statue of Great Indian freedom fighter and The first Home Minister of Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was also the First Deputy Prime Minister of India. Sardar Patel was follower of Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle of India.

Why the name, Statue of Unity? 

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was responsible for uniting the 562 Princely states of India to form a single union. Before Independence of India, the country consisted of different various small states. But Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel integrated all these states together to form the Republic of India. 

And thus, to represent his power to unite all diverse kinds of people in the country, the Statue is named as the Statue of Unity. 

Location of Statue of Unity

The Statue is located in Beautiful Narmada Valley, on the banks of the Narmada river in the Kevadiya colony. It is situated in the Narmada district in the state of Gujarat. Statue of Unity faces the huge Sardar Sarovar Dam built over the Narmada River in the magnificent city of Vadodara. This splendid Statue is constructed on a river island named Sadhu Bet. 

Foundation of Statue of Unity

The foundation of the Statue of Unity was kept on 31st October 2013 but the project was announced in 2010. It took almost five years for the completion of its construction. And on 31st October 2018, the inauguration of Statue of Unity was done by Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31st October 1875 in Nadiad district of Gujarat. Because the Statue is dedicated to The Iron Man of India, so to celebrate his 143rd birth anniversary, the inauguration took place on 31st October 2018.

Construction 

The credit for this aesthetic design of the Statue goes to the Indian sculptor, Mr. Ram V. Sutar. 

It is the replica of a Statue of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel placed at Ahmedabad International Airport, but of much larger size. The height of the statue represents the number of seats in the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat. 

It consumed 5,700 tonnes of steel, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel rods, and 2,500,000 cubic feet of concrete for its construction. Around 12,000 bronze panels are covering the Statue. 

More than 2000 workers contributed with their hard work for the building of the Statue. 

The Statue is segmented into mainly 5 sections out of which only three are open for the general public. 

First section from the base constitutes the exhibition area and mezzanine, a memorial and a museum. 

The second section reaches up to the thighs of the Statue and the third to the viewing gallery. A beautiful viewing gallery is at approximately the height of 153 meters which can support the weight of 200 people, on average at a time. The fourth and the fifth sections remain closed for the public and are kept separate for maintenance purposes. 

Museum 

There is a Museum which shows the life journey of the Iron Man of India. It also exhibits his contribution to the Independence Struggle of India. The projecting gallery also provides a small presentation on the culture of Gujarat and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. 

Visiting Times 

Public entry is open from 8am to 6 pm everyday except on Monday. 

Entry Tickets 

There are mainly four types of tickets. 

Basic – 150 INR for adults and 90 INR for children. 

Viewing Gallery – 380 INR for adults and 230 INR for children. 

Express Entry – 1030 INR for everyone with a line-free benefit. 

Foreigner Express Entry – 1530 INR and 830 INR for non-Indian people. 

Tip: Online booking of tickets a day before the visit is a much better idea… 

Security 

After the approval of the Home Ministry of India, The Statue of Unity will be secured by CISF personnel from August 25, 2020.
