NEP 2020 replaces the old National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986.

Foundational Stage (3 years of pre-school + 2 years in a primary school in Classes 1-2; both together covering ages 3-8)
- Primary Stage (Classes 3-5, covering ages 8-11)
- Middle Stage (Classes 6-8, covering ages 11-14),
- Secondary Stage (Classes 9-12, covering ages 14-18).
No Rigid Stream-based Education System i.e. More Flexibility
NEP2020 aims to be more flexible in allowing students to follow their own career paths without being entangled in the network of fixed streams and subjects. Instead, they may be allowed to select the subjects of their forte together from different fields at the same time.

It also requires a well-planned integration between schools and Higher education systems, so that the students do not face any problems while shifting from the Schools to Higher education.
Universal Access to School Education
NEP2020 aims to provide universal access to school education at all levels.
Some of the features like infrastructure support innovative educational institutions, better evaluation techniques, and well-equipped classrooms and faculty will result in transformation at the root level of the system.
It also provides for open learning through NIOS to bring back the school dropouts.
Education and Care during the crucial age of Development
This targets the proper development and growth of the uncovered age group of 3-6 years under the school curriculum which is considered as the most crucial stage for cognitive and conative development.
Power of Multilingual System
NEP2020 advocates for vernacular language as the medium for education in primary classes. The three-language formula will also result in better communication skills as well. Other Indian as well Foreign languages will also be offered as options at the secondary level.
Reformation of Assessment Techniques
With the introduction of NEP 2020, The government hopes to change from summative assessment to a method that can test competencies like analytical skills, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity. Board exams will continue but with a more holistic approach.
Along with the setup of Gender and Special education zones, students with disabilities will also be able to be the part of regular classrooms with the support of faculty well equipped for the inclusive education set up along with the technology-based tools and support mechanism to suit the needs of the children.
Higher Education Commission of India
HECI will establish a single entity for the entire Higher Education excluding medical and legal education. The function of HECI will be to intervene in the proper working of both government and privately operated educational institutions. The same set of regulations and academic standards are to be maintained by all the institutions which will be checked by HECI from time to time.
Wide Spectrum of Institutions
The universities will allow a wide range of educational institutions from research-oriented institutions to teaching-intensive institutions to function.
Multiple Entry and Exit Options
The Students who for some reason may have to opt-out of the degree courses will be accredited points according to their performance during the years they attended college and will be provided certificates depending on that. Students opting out after one year of degree course will get a certificate for the course. For two years, A diploma in the subject will be granted. Students who will complete their courses will get the degree and go for further research.
Recruitment of the Faculty
Teachers will be recruited for a robust and transparent process. Promotions and appraisals will be merit-based.
National Research Foundation
A new research-oriented Entity will be established to catalyze and expand research and innovation in every discipline and fund the institution and other bodies for this.
All education Institutions to be held as ‘Nonprofit entity’. The Union and State governments will work together to increase public investment in the education sector by up to 6% of the GDP as soon as possible.
This National Education Policy envisions an education system that is rooted in Indian ethos and directly contributes to the transformation of our country into an equitable and dynamic knowledge society, thereby, making India a global Super Power. The policy also aims to develop a deeper sense of dignity towards our Constitutional values and Fundamental duties. It also impacts in making the future generation of this country, feel proud for our country in thoughts as well as spirit, intellect, and deeds and further utilizing their best of potential to enhance the image of the country globally.
This National Education Policy also emphasizes developing such Human Resources in the country which has knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions that support responsible commitment towards global well-being. Thereby, reflecting a truly global citizen.
